Nature’s cyclical beauty is a constant reminder of the changing seasons. From the blooming flowers of spring and the long, sunlit days of summer to the cozy evenings of fall and the crisp chill of winter, each season carries its own energy. This offers us a unique opportunity to refresh and renew our yoga practice, lifestyle, and diet.
My personal yoga lifestyle is illuminated by the practices of Ayurveda, the ancient sister science to yoga. A key aspect of Ayurveda is honoring the natural rhythms of life on a daily circadian basis as well as seasonally. So, as seasons change, my practices change to suit them. In winter, it’s warm, moist, yummy foods along with active asana sequences building internal fire to ward off the external cold. In summer, light cool (or room temperature) food with lots of seasonal produce.
Right now, spring is about to turn to summer in Northern California, so we are going from cold and wet (water & earth elements) to hot and dry. In these transitional weeks, our body becomes unstable and we should pay extra care to embracing the change while supporting our transition from one season to the next.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to maintaining self-care throughout these transitions:
1. Spring: Renewal and Growth
- Spring Yoga Practice: Spring signifies awakening, growth, and transformation. It’s a time when the world comes back to life, and so should your practice. Incorporate poses that energize your body, like Sun Salutations to stretch your muscles and awaken your spirit. Heart Openers can help release any remaining winter tension, while invigorating backbends and twists will help revitalize your energy.
- Lifestyle: Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up your physical space; it’s also about cleansing your mind and emotions. Use this season to reflect on what no longer serves you, and actively engage in mindfulness practices like journaling, meditation, or nature walks to clear out mental and emotional clutter. This is the perfect time to set new intentions and goals for the coming months.
- Diet: Spring is the ideal season to introduce light, refreshing foods that help detoxify the body and boost your energy. Fresh greens like spinach, kale, and arugula are perfect for this, as are vibrant citrus fruits like lemons and grapefruits. Sprouts and herbs like parsley and cilantro can further enhance the cleansing process, so try incorporating these into salads, smoothies, and light dishes.
2. Summer: Vibrancy and Expansion
- Summer Yoga Practice: Summer embodies vibrancy, expansion, and joy. It’s a season of heightened energy, which your practice can reflect. Incorporate sequences that focus on expansive poses like backbends and hip openers to increase your energy and vitality. Flowing sequences that sync breath and movement will keep you grounded and present.
- Lifestyle: This is the time to make the most of the long, sunny days by immersing yourself in nature. Whether it’s hiking through the woods, swimming in the ocean, or practicing yoga in a sunlit park, make it a point to enjoy the great outdoors. Summer is also an ideal time for travel and adventure, so explore new places and experiences to refresh your spirit.
- Diet: As temperatures rise, it’s crucial to stay hydrated and cool. Opt for hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, and berries to replenish your body’s fluids. Light salads, chilled soups, and refreshing smoothies are perfect for providing nourishment without making you feel overheated. Adding fresh mint and basil to your dishes can also offer a refreshing twist.
3. Fall: Reflection and Balance
- Fall Yoga Practice: As leaves start to fall, it’s a sign to ground ourselves and find balance amid the changing seasons. Focus on poses that help you stay centered, like Warrior and Tree Pose, which can provide stability and strength. Incorporating forward bends and seated twists can also help you release stress and prepare for the colder months ahead.
- Lifestyle: Fall is a natural time for reflection, as the year begins to wind down. Reflect on what you’ve achieved so far, and start planning for the months to come. Take this time to cultivate a cozy atmosphere at home by bringing out warm blankets, soft lighting, and comforting scents like cinnamon and cloves. Engage in activities that bring you joy and allow for introspection.
- Diet: With the cooler weather, it’s time to embrace hearty and warming foods that nourish both body and soul. Root vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and beets provide grounding energy, while squashes and pumpkins are packed with vitamins. Adding warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg to your dishes will help maintain inner warmth and comfort.
4. Winter: Rest and Introspection
- Winter Yoga Practice: Winter invites us to slow down and embrace introspection and rest. Focus on slower flows that incorporate longer holds and restorative poses to replenish energy levels. Poses like Child’s Pose, Legs Up the Wall, and Savasana allow your body to rest deeply and restore its energy. Incorporating pranayama (breath work) practices can also enhance your practice during this restful season. Balance these slower sessions with some heat building active ones to ward off winter’s chill
- Lifestyle: Embrace the quiet and stillness of winter by dedicating time to restful activities. Curl up with a good book by the fireplace, practice meditation, or enjoy gentle stretching to help maintain flexibility. Use this time to reflect on the year gone by and set intentions for the year ahead.
- Diet: Nourishing your body is essential during winter, as the cold weather can take a toll on your energy. Warm soups, stews, and hearty grains like quinoa and barley provide comfort and sustenance. Warming spices like turmeric, cumin, and cayenne can enhance circulation and immunity, while hot teas and broths keep you hydrated and warm from the inside out.
Final Thoughts

By aligning your yoga practice, lifestyle, and diet with nature’s rhythms, you can honor both the external world and your inner self. Listen to what your body and mind need throughout each season, and embrace the journey of change with grace and intention.
